(Columbia, South Carolina) – Speaker Jay Lucas and William "Bill" McCrary, Jr. were recognized by the South Carolina Manufacturers Association as Roger Milliken Defender of Manufacturing Award Recipients last week during an awards dinner at the Marriott in Spartanburg, South Carolina.
Established in 2006, the Defender of Manufacturing Award recognizes individuals in the public and private sectors who have worked to advance the manufacturing industry in South Carolina. In 2012, the SCMA Board of Directors voted to rename the award to honor Mr. Roger Milliken, who passed away in December, 2010. Recipients are chosen by the SCMA Executive Committee.
Speaker Lucas was elected to serve District 65 in the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1998. In 2010, his colleagues elected him Speaker Pro Tempore and was elected Speaker of the South Carolina House of Representatives in 2014. Earlier this year, he received the Wilkins Award for Excellence in Legislative Leadership from the Riley Institute and the Jimmy Newsom Signature Award for his contributions to public education in Darlington County. Throughout his career in public service, he has earned several prestigious awards.
Mr. McCrary, Jr., President and CEO of William Barnet & Son, LLC, a synthetic fiber, yarn, and polymer firm, has been with the company since 1970, serving in a leadership capacity for a variety of boards including Chairman of the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance, Chairman of the American Fiber Manufacturers Association, and beginning early 2017, he will serve as Chairman of the National Council of Textile Organizations. He is also active in supporting projects in the Greenville community such as the McCrary Blood and Marrow Transplant Unit at the Greenville Hospital System and the Cancer Survivors Park.
“The manufacturing industry has a significant and meaningful impact on the quality of life for all South Carolinians,” said Lewis Gossett, President and CEO of the South Carolina Manufacturers Alliance. We’re proud to recognize the individuals with the Roger Milliken Defender of Manufacturing Award for their commitment and support to ensure that the manufacturing industry in South Carolina remains strong, prosperous, and competitive for generations.”
A Special Tribute was also made to Mr. Roger Chastain, who passed away just this past November. Mr. Chastain was Former CEO of Mount Vernon Mills. He was a fearless advocate for manufacturing in South Carolina, working diligently to ensure that this State maintained a pro-manufacturing business environment. Chastain was also a previous recipient of the Defender of Manufacturing Award.
